Editorial staff Alexander Soble  Editor-in-Chief Alexander Soble comes from Highland Park, Illinois, and is a proud member of Trumbull College majoring in Ethics, Politics, and Economics as well as South Asian Studies. Alex began writing for the Globalist in his freshman year, and his been hooked ever since. His articles have examined topics ranging from the legalization of abortion in Mexico City to the future of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. Dabbling in languages—among them, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Urdu, and Persian—is a perennial hobby of Alex’s. He hopes he will be able to put them to good use after graduating! Emma Sokoloff-Rubin Managing Editor A junior history major in Timothy Dwight College, Emma grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, Emma loves doing field research in Latin America and is always up for traveling to a new place. She joined the Globalist as a writer her freshman year, became an associate editor sophomore year, and has traveled to India and Tanzania with the Globalist. Emma loves the challenge of field research and spent the summer of 2008 doing research at a domestic violence center in Northeastern Brazil. This past summer she worked as a counselor at Seeds of Peace International Camp. At Yale, she is a FOOT leader, a master’s aide, and a clarinetist in the Davenport Pops Orchestra. Rishabh Khosla Managing Editor Rishabh is a political science major from Mumbai, India. At Yale, he’s been involved with many organizations, including The Yale Globalist and Yale's South Asian Society. He’s also worked at the Admissions Office as a Yale tour guide. Rishabh has also been very involved with Trumbull College; he’s worked as a Master’s Aide and has served on the Trumbull College Council since he was a Freshman. Rishabh loves traveling and has had the opportunity to travel through rural India, to Iran, and Tanzania on Yale research fellowships and summer study grants. In his spare time, Rishabh enjoys relaxing with friends and watching TV. Alison Weiner Managing Editor Ali is a junior History and Political Science double major in Davenport College. Like any Globalista, she loves to travel, and has spent time in Ghana, Thailand, Tanzania, Dominica, Israel, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico, France, the UK, and a few other countries. As a Globalist writer, she has had the opportunity to interview experts about such diverse topics as Israeli counterterrorism and women's education in Afghanistan. During the Globalist's 2009 annual summer reporting trip in Tanzania, Ali spent time interviewing top officials at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. In addition to the Globalist, she is involved in the Yale World Fellows Program. She is also the co-founder of Development Alliance, an umbrella resource for all things related to international development on Yale's campus.
Jeffrey Kaiser  Managing Editor A sophomore in Saybrook College, Jeff, though currently undeclared, hopes to study something in the fields of political science and international relations. He is currently learning Arabic and hopes to eventually work in the Middle East. Jeff became involved in the Globalist early in his freshman year after hearing great things about the magazine from other students. Like most members of the Globalist community, Jeff loves to travel at every possible opportunity. Catherine Osborn Online Editor Catherine is a sophomore in Pierson College and a proud native of Austin, Texas, where she developed a love for speaking Spanish and adding an avocado to whatever she is eating. A Latin American Studies and International Studies major, Catherine has been lucky enough to study in Oaxaca and Guanajuato, Mexico. At home she has interned with the Online Editor of Texas Monthly magazine and on campus she has produced video for the Yale Daily News and reported for the Globalist on Mexican politics. Also at Yale, she is active in FOOT and WYBC Yale Radio. This summer, she interned at a contemporary art museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She especially loves photography and is excited about building the Globalist’s photo archive.
Christina Lin Production Editor Christina Lin is a junior Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics major in Pierson College from Middletown, New Jersey. As production editor, she is in charge of producing the magazine's print version in addition to other design needs. She has traveled extensively across the United States and attended the 2007 National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia as a New Jersey delegate before arriving at Yale. Last summer, she worked at the Yale Medical School as part of the Perspectives in Science program. This March, she journeyed out of the U.S. for the first time into Ecuador's diverse ecosystems, including the Amazon rainforest. She enjoys the challenge of not only "making sure everything prints O.K." but also guiding the unique style of The Yale Globalist. Angela Ramirez Associate Editor A sophomore in Davenport College, Angela is a prospective double major in Ethics, Politics, and Economics and International Studies. She was born and raised in Colombia until the age of ten, at which point she moved to New Jersey and realized that learning English would be important. Angela is a class representative on the Davenport College Council and a staff member of the Elmseed Enterprise Fund, a microcredit lending student-run corporation for the betterment of the city of New Haven. The summer after her freshman year, she got the opportunity to travel to France to take an intensive French language course with Yale. In line with her interest in international relations, Angela is very excited to be a student liaison for the World Fellow’s Program. In the future, she hopes to keep traveling around the world learning about different cultures and people on Yale’s budget.
Alexander Klein Associate Editor Alex is a Davenport College sophomore, English/South-African New Yorker, prospective Ethics, Politics & Economics major, Spanish speaker, and occasional adjective abuser. He has absolutely loved contributing to and carousing with the Globalist since the publication of his first article, which told the story of VillageReach/VidaGas, a Mozambican social business and healthcare NGO. The article was entitled "Doing Good, Making Money", and in the future, Alex hopes to do his fair share of both. In anticipation, he has occupied his time with interning for the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, think-tanking as a Research Fellow at the Center for Nonmarket Strategy in Madrid, and pouring through the Western Canon. At Yale, Alex pontificates regularly in the opinions section of the Yale Daily News, competes as a member of Model UN Team Yale, serves on Yale International Relations Association Secretariats, performs in Yale's premiere improv comedy troupe, The Viola Question, and desperately tries to fit in some acting in the interim.
Rae Ellen Bichell  Associate Editor Rae Ellen Bichell is a sophomore in Davenport College. Her international experience has been ongoing since age 5, when her family hosted the first of 14 foreign exchange students, and when she started French-English bilingual school in Massachusetts. Since then she’s traveled to France, Germany, Switzerland, Peru, and Kazakhstan. She enjoyed writing for the Globalist freshman year, loved going on the reporting trip to Tanzania, and hopes to continue traveling and writing, particularly on places where Starbucks and McDonald’s have yet to colonize. Uzra Khan  Associate Editor Uzra is from the very exciting city of Mumbai, India (though she insists on calling it by its old name, Bombay), and is in Trumbull College. Interested in psychology, writing, and international studies, the Globalist is her first love at Yale. She is also involved with the South Asian Society, and enjoys reading (anything ranging from Jeffrey Archer to The Economist and even Archie comics), dancing, and music. The summer before her sophomore year, she interned with J Walter Thompson and with The Times of India in Bombay. Raphaella Friedman Associate Editor Raphaella Friedman, also known as Raffi, plans to double major in Political Science and History and is a proud member of Trumbull College. The daughter of South African immigrants, she was born and raised in the unlikely hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Raffi has an avid interest in the Middle East and is involved in Seeds of Peace, an international camp that fosters reconciliation between Israeli and Palestinian teenagers. Recently, Raffi worked in a UNRWA-run Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan. She is also on the Executive Leadership Council of Operation Smile, an international medical nonprofit, and worked on a medical mission in Lima, Peru. On campus, Raffi is involved in the World Fellows Liason program and FOOT, in addition to the Globalist. This summer, post-Globalist reporting trip to Tanzania, she spent most of her time between maximum-security jails as an intern in the Public Defenders office.
Rachel Wolf Copyeditor Born and raised in Palo Alto, California, Rachel came to Yale fearing the snow and looking forward to having a proper school mascot (she grew up watching Stanford's dancing tree). This is her second year as the Globalist's copy editor, a post that allows her to indulge her love of language while battling the overuse of em dashes. In addition to traveling to Tanzania with the Globalist, Rachel has worked in microfinance in the Dominican Republic, journalism in Uganda, and communications in New York. A junior Political Science major in Saybrook college, Rachel also sits on the board of the Yale International Relations Association as the head delegate of the traveling Model United Nations Team at Yale. Catherine Cheney Editor-at-Large Catherine Cheney, a rising senior in Trumbull College, is pursuing her bachelor's and master's degrees in political science, and devotes much of her time at Yale to journalism and international research, particularly focusing on Latin America. She has written and edited for the Globalist since her freshman year and has produced print and film work in Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, and Tanzania. Past internship experiences include working as an intern for National Geographic Films, a reporter for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, a consultant with the World Council of Credit Unions, a broadcast producer for the Freedom Forum, and most recently a reporter for The Washington Post. Her other activities at Yale include serving as a tour guide, the online editor of The Yale Daily News, and the student coordinator of the Yale Journalism initiative. She is looking forward to another great year with the Globalist!
Amila Golic Editor-at-Large A proud Chicagoan (Go Cubbies!), Amila was born in Bosnia and spent her childhood in Croatia, Austria, and Germany before immigrating to the United States. Those years of travel shaped her long-standing curiosity about different cultures and far-off places, an interest she satisfies through her involvement with The Yale Globalist, for which she served as events coordinator, associate editor, and managing editor in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Two summers past, Amila was the trip planner for the magazine's annual reporting trip and led magazine staff to India for two weeks, where they reported on issues related to the urban development of New Delhi. In other summers, she traveled to Venezuela with the Globalist, did independent historical research in Bosnia, and interned for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. A junior in Pierson College, she is studying English literature. Business staff Alice Walton Executive Director Alice Walton, a native of Berkeley, California, and senior History major in Pierson College, is thrilled to be taking the post of Executive Director of The Yale Globalist. After spending a year in Italy in high school, she dedicated herself to the study of all things international and at Yale quickly migrated to the Globalist. Last summer she traveled with the magazine to Delhi, where she reported on municipal water supply before heading to Budapest, where she interned at Green Horizons, the magazine of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe. This summer she is working at Bottlenotes.com, an online wine marketing and networking firm based in sunny California. While she loves writing and executive-directing The Yale Globalist, she also finds time to keep her extra-curricular interests broad. As an Intramural Secretary for Pierson College she plays more sports than she can count, as a Harvest leader she gets down and dirty on organic farms, and on the Board of Directors of Yale Children's Theater she entertained quite a few four-year-olds.
Courtney Fukuda Publisher Courtney Fukuda, a sophomore economics major in Berkeley College, was born in Tokyo and grew up in Hawaii and studied in Beijing during high school. Training 24 hours a week as a competitive gymnast for 10 years left her little time for journalism (or anything else for that matter), but since starting college, she has chosen to vary her extracurricular activities to include the Globalist, AIESEC, and the Berkeley College Council, among others. In the future, Courtney hopes to pursue a career in international business, particularly in East Asia. As a gourmet food affecianado and advocate for organic/sustainable agriculture, Courtney spent 10 weeks interning for Slow Food International at their regional headquarter in Kanda, Japan.
George Bogden Director of Development George is a junior Ethics, Politics, and Economics major in Silliman College from Kailua, Hawaii. He has written for the Globalist since the fall of his freshman year on topics ranging from healthcare in Africa to transportation in New Delhi. George participated in the magazine’s research trips to India and Tanzania, and served as an associate editor last year. In addition to his work for the Globalist, George is also active in the Yale International Relations Association and his college’s activities and administrative council. He studies French and Turkish, and has enjoyed doing research on Turkish foreign policy for the last two summers in Istanbul and Ankara with support from the Macmillan Center. Joanna Cornell Events Coordinator A sophomore in Saybrook College, Joanna Cornell has loved every second of being a Globalista. Joanna served as assistant events coordinator last year and is thrilled to be returning as events coordinator. After living in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. for the past nine years of her life, she is in love with the city and has spent numerous summers exploring it. She loves traveling and trying new things. At the moment, she hopes to major in Economics and East Asian Studies, though her future plans are still nebulous at best. When she's not Globalisting, Joanna is busy organizing conferences and exchanges to China through AIESEC, writing for the Yale Herald, and working at the law school.
Joseph Bolognese Assistant Events Coordinator Having been raised in the delightful climate of Buffalo, New York, Joe is thrilled to be working with the Globalist in the tropical oasis that is New Haven. His curiosity about the personal side of international issues led to him to join the team. This sophomore in Pierson College is also the Publicity and Outreach chair of the Yale Pre-Law Society and works at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. He enjoys learning new languages. Joe has lived in the Philippines and spent his last summer solidifying his Russian and backpacking his way back home through Europe. Editors emeritus
Pete Martin Pete is a senior Religious Studies major in Morse College from New York City. He has written for the Globalist since arriving at Yale, and he has been an editor for the magazine since his sophomore year, serving a year each as an associate editor, managing editor, and editor emeritus. The Globalist has taken him to Venezuela, India, and Tanzania to report and photograph, and in recent years he has traveled on his own to other countries in Africa, Europe, and South America. In addition to his work for the Globalist, Pete has worked for The Yale Daily News as a sports columnist, staff photographer, and opinion editor. He shares his unpublished writing and photography on his blog at peterfmartin.com.
Emma Vawter An insatiable reader and wanderer, Emma, now a senior in Silliman College, has enjoyed a place in the Globalist family since her freshman year. Since coming to Yale, Emma has traveled to Venezuela and India with the Globalist, led three service trips to El Salvador with the non-profit International Partners, studied twice in Italy, and travelled through the Balkans visiting friends from around the world, some of them Globalistas themselves. She is excited to witness the beginning of her freshmen's Yale adventures as a Silliman freshman counselor in her final year. In addition to being entirely besotted with the Globalist and Silliman College, Emma is an English major who hopes to go to music school to pursue classical singing, particularly opera. She hopes to continue to write and work on grassroots development in El Salvador while training as a soprano.
Jesse Marks An avid writer and a proud Bostonian, Jesse is a double major in Economics and International Studies. He is especially interested in international security and its implications for economic development. Outside of The Yale Globalist, Jesse is the executive director of Global21, the network of Globalist magazines at universities around the world. Jesse firmly believes that, by engaging tomorrow's leaders in dialogue on the world's most pressing issues, all of the Globalist chapters are helping to make our world a better place. At Yale, Jesse also plays club soccer and has served on student government. He has spent his last two summers interning for Raytheon, an American defense contractor, in Burlington, Massachusetts. Maria Blackwood 
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Maria Blackwood split her childhood between the U.S. and Poland. She grew up witnessing the post-communist transition firsthand - she was in Berlin when the Berlin Wall came down as well as in the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia when it declared independence. At Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Maria wrote and edited for several student publications. Currently a senior at Yale, she is pursuing a double major in History and Economics, mostly concentrating on her fascination with the Caucasus and Central Asia. In 2007, Maria spent her summer in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and, in 2008 she led a group of Yale students to the Republic of Georgia. She speaks Polish, French, Russian, and German, but is still working on English. Business mentors Amira Valliani 
Amira Valliani is a proud Northern Californian and a senior Political Science major in Silliman College. Born to immigrant parents, growing up Amira had several opportunities to travel internationally and her interest in international affairs has only grown stronger since coming to Yale. She has written and worked on the business side of the Globalist since freshman year and was Executive Director of the Globalist her junior year. Amira has taken every chance she's gotten to travel since coming to college; she's partied in the streets of Hong Kong, monitored elections in Venezuela, and backpacked around the Middle East. When she's not hatching schemes to see the world, Amira works at Yale's admissions office and is a freshman counselor. She's also an avid foodie. Gemma Bloemen 
Gemma is a Senior Psychology and International Studies double major in Pierson College who hails from the Netherlands. She was previously the Publisher of the Yale Globalist. At Yale, Gemma currently serves on the Executive Board of Global21, as an International Peer Liaison, and student assistant at the Council on European Studies. In previous years, she co-founded the Yale European Undergraduates and served as Business Director for the Gaze and as a World Fellows Liaison. Gemma has spend her summers traveling to China, India and Tanzania and working for the Advisory Commission on Aliens affairs in the Hague, Unitymedia in Cologne, and most recently McKinsey & Company in Amsterdam. Gemma loves to travel and is very interested in politics and international affairs. In the far future she hopes to pursue a career in the European Union.
